Eights Can’t Hold on to Lead, Fall in First Dakota Classic Game

Pierre Post 8 would build a 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth against Fort Calhoun in the first game of the Dakota Classic on Friday, but would fall 7-6 in a walk off.

JJ Bucholz would get an RBI single in the top of the second after Dawson Getz would open the inning with a leadoff triple. Then, Getz would come up with two on in the top of the third and send a big fly over the left field wall to make it 4-0 for Post 8. In the top of the fourth, Charlie Simpson would be picked off of first, but with a runner on the third got into a pickle to help Sutton Sonnenschein come in to score giving the Eights a 5-0 advantage. But with a 5-1 score in the bottom of the sixth, Pierre would allow two bases loaded walks and a three run double to fall behind 6-5. Carter Scheifelbein, with two outs in the top of the seventh, would pick up an RBI single to tie the game at 6-6. In the bottom half of the inning and runners at first and second, Fort Calhoun would drop a bunt down in the front of the mound and the throw would sail into right field scoring the winning run. Brayden Houlette had an excellent outing going five and 1/3 innings allowing seven hits, five runs, five walks and three strikeouts. Bucholz would would be tagged with the loss giving up two runs, one unearned on a hit, two walks and two strikeouts.

Pierre will take on Harrisburg and West Fargo in a doubleheader. The game has been pushed back an hour to 11:30 with coverage starting at 11:15 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
