Kansas City’s First Inning Dooms Canaries

The Kansas City Monarchs would score 10 runs in the top of the first and defeat the Sioux Falls Canaries 17-6 on Thursday to drop the series at home.

Kansas City hit its two home runs in the first inning including a grand slam as starter Michael Walters couldn’t get through the first inning of work. It put the Canaries in a hole to deep to dig themselves out. Sioux Falls would get two runs in the first and another three in the third but still trailed 11-5 after three innings. Jordan Barth and Josh Wehwaldt would both homer in the loss. Pierre’s Spencer Sarringar went 1-5 with a run scored. Saringar is hitting .303 through the first 23 games of the season playing in 19 of the 23. He has six extra base hits including three homers with 17 RBIs.

Sioux Falls will drop to 14-9 with the loss and open up a weekend series against the Lincoln Saltdogs on the road.
