South Dakota’s Capital Startled with Earthquake

The Pierre area had an abrupt shake Thursday afternoon…

Hughes County Sheriff Patrick Callahan started making phone calls to report the rumbling…

It is the biggest earthquake of magnitude since Fort Thompson had a 4.4 magnitude earthquake on March 4 of 1983. It’s the first time the Pierre/Ft. Pierre area had felt an earthquake recorded since August of 2011 which was a 3.3 recorded earthquake. Sheriff Callahan says if you want to make a report about the earthquake please do not call 9-1-1 if it is not an emergency and head over to the United States Geological Survey website and tell your story there…

The last earthquake recorded in Central South Dakota was a 3.0 magnitude in Onida on August 15 of 2017.
