Arrest Of Stolen Vehicle Suspect Leads To Shelter-In-Place Order For Two Pierre Schools

PIERRE, (KCCR) — A Springfield man is arrested in Pierre Wednesday in an incident that lead to a shelter-in-place for an elementary school. Pierre Police Captain Dusty Pelle says officers noticed 29 year-old Ramiro Gonzalez on Capitol Avenue near Lakeview Court. Gonzalez, who had active arrest warrants, was a suspect in a stolen vehicle case in Pierre. Gonzalez fled into a nearby trailer court when spotted by police. When police couldn’t find Gonzalez, nearby Buchanan Elementary School and Oahe Child Development were put under a shelter-in-place order for extra protection. Multiple law enforcement agencies set up a perimeter around the Lakeview Trailer Court. Gonzales was located in a residence in the court and was taken into custody around 10:30 am. Gonzales was taken to the Hughes County Jail on multiple outstanding warrants, Possession of a Stolen Vehicle and two drug charges. Pierre police were assisted in the arrest of Gonzales by the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office, Hughes/Stanley County Emergency Management; South Dakota Highway Patrol, U-S Marshals Service, Division of Criminal Investigation and Federal Bureau of Investigation.
