Augustana Wins Conference Tournament with Long Ball

The Augustana Vikings would defeat Minnesota State on Saturday 8-3 to win the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference baseball tournament using four home runs in the win.

Nick Banowetz would hit a solo shot in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1-1. Drey Dirksen would give the Vikings a 2-1 lead with a solo homer in the fourth. Jason Axelberg would then untie the game again in the fifth with another solo home run to give the Vikings a 3-2 lead. Dirksen would get his second RBI untying the game in the sixth with an RBI fielder’s choice giving Augie a 4-3 advantage. Tate Meiners would hit a two run homer in the seventh to seal the win and the NSIC tournament championship. Mariano Gomex would get the win on the mound going six innings allowing just three runs on five hits with four strikeouts in six innings of work.

The selection show for the Division II National Tournament is scheduled for Sunday night where the Vikings will know who and where they will be playing next weekend.
