For the second time in two days, the Pierre Governors had a pitcher go the distance as Jett Zabel threw a complete game shutout one hitter in a 1-0 victory over Jefferson in game one before falling 7-5 in game two.
Zabel had just one walk while hitting four batters, but the senior left hander was one strike away from the second no hitter in the last two seasons by a Pierre Governor pitcher. Zabel finished with five punch outs. Pierre scored its only run in the top of the fifth on a two out error as George Stalley, who doesn’t get credit for the RBI scored Easland who had a one out triple. Pierre had just three hits as Stalley and Nolan Peteresen each reached base.
In game two, Jefferson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second before the Govs with an RBI from Cooper Terwilliger and a wild pitch would score both runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 2-2. A five run bottom of the fourth would doom the Govs as Noah Hollingshead would hit a bases loaded clearing double for a five run inning and holding on for a 7-5 win in the second game. Zabel, Charlie Simpson and Petersen each had an RBI in the loss. Will Danburg was tagged with the loss giving up six runs, three earned on six hits, three walks with four strikeouts in three and 2/3 innings.
Pierre is now at 7-4 on the season and will face the Roosevelt Roughriders next week Friday in the home opener at Historic Hyde Stadium. Coverage begins at 4:45 with first pitch of the doubleheader at 5:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
