PIERRE, (KCCR) — Getting between Pierre and Fort Pierre Sunday morning will be a challenge, at least for a few hours. The South Dakota Department of Transportation is closing the John Waldron Memorial Bridge between the Hughes and Stanley County seats from seven am to nine am on Sunday April 14th. The closure is so Department of Transportation crews can conduct maintenance on the current Waldron bridge. Electronic signs noting the closure will be placed on both sides of the bridge entrances to alert motorists of the pending temporary closure on Sunday. During the closure, the only way to get from Pierre to Fort Pierre or Fort Pierre to Pierre will be by use of a detour over the Oahe Dam by using state highways 1806, 1804 and 2024 over the Dam itself. Provided there are no issues with the inspection, crews will reopen the Waldron bridge around nine-am on Sunday morning. Unrelated to this weekend’s temporary closure, head-to-head traffic is expect to resume over the Waldron bridge at the end of the month. Traffic should start moving over the new bridge near the start of August.
