Sonnenschein’s Home Run Helps Split Doubleheader with Washington

Sutton Sonnenschein would hit his first varsity home run on Saturday in game two of a doubleheader against Washington as the Pierre Governors would earn a split with a 10-0 loss in game one and a 13-1 win in game two.

There’s not going to be many windier days than Saturday to play baseball, but the Governors and Warriors fought through it to play with both teams picking up a win. In game one, Pierre would strand the bases loaded in the top of the first signaling how the rest of the game would go. The Govs only had one more player reach third the rest of the way in the six inning loss. Washington would lead 2-0 after four innings but hang a five spot in the fifth and score another three runs in the sixth. Miles Doyle would be tagged with the loss but only give up two runs over the four innings he threw. Trevor Rounds would give up the final eight runs on six hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

In game two, Pierre jumped on the Warriors early with a four spot in the first with Charlie Simpson driving in two on a single into left. Sonnenschein would get a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0 and after four runs would score in the top of the second off walks, hit by pitch and a wild pitch, Sonnenschein would deliver the dagger and biggest hit of the game with a three run home run with the wind both helping and almost hindering the big fly. The wind, blowing from first base to the third base almost pushed the ball on the wrong side of the foul pole, but it tucked in enough for the first of his varsity career. Will Danburg would pick up the five inning complete game win allowing five hits on one walk and eight strikeouts.

Pierre, now 4-2, will travel to Huron on Tuesday to face the Tigers in a JV, Varsity doubleheader. The JV will play first at 5:00 with the varsity to follow. The varsity game will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with first pitch around 7:00.
