Governors Sixth Inning Dooms First Loss

Governors Sixth Inning Dooms First Loss

The Pierre Governor baseball team would fall in the opening game of the season on Thursday night with a 13-3 sixth inning loss allowing 11 runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Pierre would lead 3-2 heading into the sixth before allowing seven walks, two errors and four hits for 11 runs to score in the loss. Down 2-0 heading into the third, Spencer Easland would single into center field as the centerfielder would misplay the ball allowing Miles Doyle to score from first and Easland to get to third and a throwing error allowed him to score to tie the game at 2-2. Doyle would then give the Govs the lead 3-2 with an RBI single in the fifth, the only RBI picked up by the Govs in the first game. Matthew Brewer tripled in the fifth scoring the run on Doyle’s hit as Ridge Leimbach had the only other hit of the four for Pierre in the loss. Doyle picked up the loss on the mound allowing two runs in two innings of work. Jett Zabel, in the start, allowed two runs on one hit with five walks and four strikeouts. Pierre had 14 walks and two errors. A key to the season is to limit the walks and errors which the Govs did not do.

Pierre will look to go to 1-1 on the season on Friday with a matchup against the Sturgis Scoopers. Coverage will begin around 3:45 with first pitch around 4:00. The game will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
