Governors Rally Comes up Short in First Round

The Pierre Governors would fall 45-41 to the Jefferson Cavaliers in the first round of the state tournament nearly coming back from a 10 point fourth quarter deficit.

The second quarter was the killer for the Govs in the AA first round game in Sioux Falls. After Pierre led 7-5 getting late into the end of the first quarter, Jefferson would lead 10-7 at the end of the quarter and then hold the Govs to just two points in the second leading 24-9 at the break. Pierre tried to mount its rally late in the third and through the fourth quarter and got the lead down to a possession, but a turnover and made free throws down the stretch for Jefferson led to the Cavs picking up the win in the 4-5 matchup and advancing to face top seed O’Gorman in the state semifinals Friday night. Brinley Altenburg had 13 points to led the Cavs while Aliyah McGovern-Harrington would knock in 12 points. Reese Terwilliger and Lennix DuPris for Pierre each had the game high 16 points for the two Govs in double figures.

Pierre, now 15-7 on the season will face the Stevens Raiders on Friday with a 12:00 tip off at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. DT Meyer will have the call on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
