Governor Wrestling Second Place Finish Shows Heart and Battle

The Pierre Governor boys wrestling team had three state champions and a total of five wrestlers in the state final which no other team can say in 2024. Pierre finished in second as a team at the state tournament back on February 22-24, but it wasn’t without a lot of questions heading into the final weeks of the season.

Pierre had the sickness bug hit heading into Regions week and the team didn’t have a full roster most of the final days of practice leading up to the tournament. Shawn Lewis, head coach of the Governors says the perseverance really stands out from this group…

The Governors finished with three state champions and a team score of 176 falling only by 21 points at 197.5 to Sturgis. Most years, a 176 is enough to win a state championship. Tristan Spencer in 138 had a 7-3 decision win over Caleb Hodges of Madison, Lucas Chamberlin in the 165 with an overtime sudden victory win 12-10 over Logan O’Connor of Harrisburg and Chance Carda in the 190 picking up the pin defeating Elijah Schunke of Brandon Valley at 4:37 would all win state titles as Lewis talks about all three winning their respective titles in their senior year…

Gable Uhrig in the 106 would place second after he had two pinfall wins to reach the semifinals and an injury default win to reach the championship match. Elijah Boutchee would win a 6-5 decision over Chet Charda in the 215 reaching the championship match before falling to Zak Juelfs of Sturgis in the title bout. Lewis has high praise for both competitors…

Other podium placers for the Governors was Trey Lewis in the 175 placing third while Alex Oedekoven in the 132 placed fifth, Jaxon Ducheneaux in the 157 placed seventh and Lincoln Schoenhard eighth in the 126. Lewis says it was one of the best tournaments the Governors wrestled collectively as a team…

Lewis says these seniors will be missed, but a great group leaving the program…
