From Seventh to Second, Capitals JV Team Reaches State Title

The Oahe Capitals boys JV squad would find out early Friday morning a mix up in the state seeding would put them from sixth to seventh, but it didn’t deter them as the Caps would still reach the championship game before falling to Rushmore 4-2 on Sunday.

Friday afternoon, finding out they would play Sioux Falls East, Oahe built a 4-2 lead in the third period before the Flyers would rally to tie the game and force overtime, but Luke Miller would score the game winning goal to win 5-4 and upset the second seeded Flyers in the first round.

The momentum would continue on Saturday as the Caps would shutout the Sioux Falls West Flyers, the third seed in the tournament with a 3-0 win as Asher Vanden Bos, Alex McIntire and Camron Lee would all score as Jaxon Jungwirth would stop all 21 shots for the shutout.

Sunday, the Capitals would run into the buzzsaw of Rushmore, the top overall seed who went undefeated in the regular season and would fall 4-2, but not without a fight. Oahe down 3-0, had a goal late in the second from Lyle Boni to make it 3-1 and then Vanden Bos would pull the Caps within one at 3-2. An empty net goal with four seconds left would reach the final score as the Thunder take home the championship trophy while the Caps finish in second.

Next up will be the boys varsity state tournament this coming weekend Friday-Sunday in Brookings. Oahe will play Sioux Falls East at 2:00 Friday afternoon in the first round. All 11 games will be on Capital City Rock and on YouTube at Capital city Rock Sports.
