Trial Date Moved To August For Pierre Homicide Defendant

PIERRE, (KCCR) — A Pierre man charged with First Degree Murder in connection to the stabbing death of a Rapid City woman in a Pierre apartment has a new trial date. A May trial date for 23 year-old David Shangreaux has been moved to a mid-to-late August time frame. Shangreaux appeared in court via the state’s I-T-V system from the Human Services Center in Yankton. Shangreaux’s attorney Justin Bell told Sixth Circuit Judge Christina Klinger that Shangreaux was found to be a danger to himself and others and to inmates and staff at the Hughes County Jail, prompting the move. Bell was seeking a competency evaluation for Shangreaux. Assistant Attorney General Ernest Thompson told Klinger Shangreaux did not enter pleas including insanity defenses. Due to the mental health issues, Bell said the current trial schedule was unrealistic to keep. Shangreaux is charged with murder and aggravated assault for the November 30th 2023 death of 17 year-old Evie Maxey. Court documents indicate Maxey had been stabbed multiple times in athe apartment bathroom.
