Lower Brule Runs Past Sully Buttes to Advance in Region 6B

Despite losing their starting guard in the first half, the Lower Brule Sioux played in overdrive, and Sully Buttes couldn’t keep up. As a result, the Sioux end the Chargers season 63-38 Tuesday night in Lower Brule.

The Sioux led 16-4 after one quarter, and 35-14 at the half, then let up on the gas as the Chargers went cold shooting from inside and outside most of the night. The Sioux defense cut off any chance of the Chargers getting into any game rhythm from the start, and pushed their record to 11-9 on the season.

Leading the way for Lower Brule was 6’8″ senior Payton Palmier, who finished with 20 points. Palmier was the only Sioux player in double figures. The Sioux lost guard Lane Gray with a knee injury, but found balanced scoring, as nine other Sioux players scored. Sully Buttes was led by Wesley Wittler, who ended his night and season with 19 points for the 9-12 Chargers. 

Next up for Lower Brule is a trip to Gettysburg Friday night to take on the second seeded Potter County Battlers, a 64-37 winner over Lyman. On the other side of the 6B bracket, fifth seeded Highmore Harrold knocked off fourth seed Ipswich in Ipswich 39-31, and the Pirates will face top seed Faulkton Area, a 65-31 winner over Herreid Selby Area.
