Governors Boys, Girls with Near Full Team Looks for another Team Championship

Today begins the three day state wrestling tournament in Sioux Falls as both Class A and B will competing at the Denny Sanford Premier Center.

The Pierre Governor boys wrestling team will almost be taking the full squad to the state tournament battling through arguably the toughest region to make the state tournament. Pierre will have Sturgis, Brandon Valley and Watertown as teams competing for the team title along with the Govs. Shawn Lewis, head coach of the Pierre boys wrestling team says the Govs need to find a way to get and create bonus points with pins, tech falls and major decision wins…

Lewis says the team has been dealing with sickness over the last couple of weeks and a key to success this weekend isn’t necessarily wrestling related…

The Governor girls have reached 11 of the possible 12 weight classes trying to defend its state title for another year. Pierre and Canton have gone back and forth with team wins with the Governors getting the unofficial dual state championship a couple of weeks ago. Matt Thorson, head coach of the Governor girls says first wins are important to help keep pace early on for a team championship and every matchup is a little bit different…

To repeat as state champs, Thorson says every girl needs to everything they possibly can…

The schedule will be the first round at 10:00 for all girls and boys weight classes and then quarterfinal matches will begin at 4:00 in the afternoon. Every wrestler will be able to compete on Thursday and Friday. A link to both the girls and boys wrestling tournaments on our website at kccrradio.com.
