Bill To Help Funding Of Code Talker Memorial Comes Before Joint Appropriations Committee

PIERRE, (KCCR) — A bill that would help fund in part a memorial to Lakota Code Talkers at Capitol Lake in Pierre remains alive. Senate Bill 162 would put an undetermined amount of general funds to the fundraising effort behind the memorial. Kevin Hipple is a member of the South Dakota American Legion and says South Dakota has a great history of supporting its service members….

Yolanda Sung with the Bureau of Finance and Management says having the state help fund the memorial’s statues would be unfair to other groups who supported their statues through private donations…

The Joint Committee on Appropriations had eight bills on its agenda Tuesday. One bill was tabled at the request of the sponsor and the Committee delayed final action on the others.
