The Pierre Governor boys basketball team hit a buzz saw on Friday afternoon with a 74-50 loss to the Mitchell Kernels while the Governor girls would drop a 49-48 decision in a near big win for Pierre in Mitchell.
The Mitchell boys team showed why they are the top team in the state as Markus Talley and Colton Smith each scored 20 plus points with 21 for Smith and 20 for Talley. Mitchell went up 17-10 at the end of the first quarter and took a 17 point lead into the half. The Kernels led by as many as 27 in the fourth quarter to win by 24 and improve to 16-1 on the season while the Govs fall to 10-8. Dawson Getz hit four threes scoring a team high 18 points while Luke Olson had 12 as Pierre went 8-12 from the free throw line.
In the girls contest, the Govs had three players hit double figures as Lennix DuPris would lead the team with 13 points while Ryann Barry had 11 and Aliese Christophersen finished with 10. The Govs were held to just 29 points at the end of three quarters, but scored 19 fourth quarter points to nearly beat the Kernels and hand them back-to-back losses after starting the year at 15-0. The Kernels were led in scoring by Sawyer Stoebner with 28 points while Allison Meyerink had 16 and Addie Siemsen finished with 10 as the three hit double figures. Pierre falls to 12-5 on the year.
Pierre boys will host the Jefferson Cavaliers on Tuesday while the Governor girls will travel to Jefferson in the final road game of the season. Tip off of both games will be at 7:00.
