Pierre Wrestling Looks for Repeat State Dual Championship

The Pierre Governor wrestling team will be in Brookings on Saturday for the dual state tournament as the Govs look to defend their title and win their third in four years.

Pierre will open the tournament as the two seed and face the West Central Trojans in the first round of the tournament. The Governors finished the season at 9-2 with its only losses to top seeded Sturgis and fifth seeded Brandon Valley. West Central lost its two matches to Sturgis and to Canton. Shawn Lewis, head coach of the Governors says West Central is still a really good team and they need to be at the top of their game from the start…

The top of the bracket will pit Sturgis against eighth ranked Tea Area and Aberdeen Central against Brandon Valley in the 4-5 match. Pierre will face either Rapid City Stevens or Watertown from the 3-6 contest in either the consolation semifinal or championship semifinal. Lewis says having seen almost every other team in the state tournament will help prepare for the next round while not seeing West Central can help ignite the excitement…

But overall, Lewis says to take it one dual at a time…

The dual state tournament begins with the first round at 11:00, the second round to follow 15 minutes later and the final round at 2:00 all the Dakotah Bank Center in Brookings. You can see a bracket on our website at kccrradio.com.
