PIERRE, (KCCR) — The Senate Military and Veteran’s Affairs Committee of the South Dakota Legislature has passed a bill to fund a memorial to the Lakota Code Talkers at Capitol Lake in Pierre. District 26 Senator Shawn Bordeaux of Mission says Senate Bill 162 would help Native Americans supporting the memorial’s fundraising efforts….

The only opposition came from the Bureau of Finance and Management. Budget Analyst Yolanda Sung requested the Committee pass the bill to appropriators….

Representative Tamera St. John reassured Committee member, Senator Larry Zikmund that Tribal funding of the memorial remains a priority…

Senate Bill 162 was passed on the Joint Committee on Appropriations by a six-one vote.
