State To Not Seek Death Penalty In Pierre Murder Case

PIERRE, (KCCR) — A Pierre man charged in the death of a Rapid City woman last November has pleaded not guilty to those charges. David Shangreaux, Jr. entered not guilty pleas to a charge of First Degree Murder; Second Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault. First Degree Murder is punishable by life in prison or the death penalty. Sixth Circuit Judge Christina Klinger noted that prosecutors from the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office have indicated that they will not seek the death penalty in the case. Defense attorney Justin Bell told Klinger Shangreaux is seeking a jury trial. A trial date has not been set. Bell also told Klinger he needed a month before holding the next pre-trial hearing. A non-evidentiary hearing is set for February 29th at two-pm at the Hughes County Courthouse. Shangreaux is charged in connecting to the stabbing death of 17 year-old Evie Maxey at a Pierre apartment on November 30th. He’s being held at the Hughes County Jail on a 300-thousand dollar bond.
