Using their size and experience, the Highmore-Harrold Pirates would take care of business against Sully Buttes and win 82-62 Thursday night in Onida.
The Pirates were led in scoring by 6’5″ senior Trake Cowan, who finished with 27 points, along with backcourt senior Carson Stephenson adding 22 for the 2-4 Pirates. Sully Buttes couldn’t get any inside game going against the taller Pirates, had two low post players foul out in the second half and had three more starters in the game playing with four fouls apiece.
Trailing 21-16 after the first quarter, the Chargers got lapped by the Pirates with Highmore Harrold outscoring them 24-11 in the second quarter to go in with a 45-26 lead at the break. The Chargers fought valiantly in the third quarter, pulling within two, but went cold from the field while the Pirates continued to pound the low post position to pull away in the fourth. The Chargers were led by Wesley Wittler who had eight points at the half, but finished with 31 for the game. Fellow sophomore Gavin Colson added 18 for 2-2 Sully Buttes.
Next up for the Charger boys is a road doubleheader Monday in Aberdeen against the Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers. Highmore Harrold plays at home Tuesday against Faulkton.
