Barry, Sargent Hoping to Help Pave Way for Girls in Football

It’s not the first time a girl has played football for the Pierre Governors, but it’s uncommon to have two girls play football for the Governors. Ryann Barry and Brianna Sargent, both soccer players decided to go out for football and kick. Both are hoping to be the latest to help trailblaze the sport.

Barry was Pierre’s primary place kicker for the season while Sargent had the kickoff duties and even recorded a tackle in the team’s opening game of the season. While not practicing tackling, Sargent learned the gap closer and was able to force the kick returner back to the middle of the field and she helped tackle the returner. Sargent says it was indescribable the fun she had playing football this year…

Barry says she loved every minute of playing football this year…

Barry went 5-5 in extra points in the state championship which is the new state record for points in a game by a girl in football, previously held by Pierre’s Mack Rath in 2018. Barry says she wasn’t thinking about a new state record, but was nervous to kick in the state championship…

Sargent says she’s hoping to lead more young girls to play football, which included taking pictures with the little girls during the state championship weekend this year…

Barry and Sargent became the third and fourth girls to kick for the Pierre Governors in the last 10 plus years.
