Governor Girls Dominate, Boys Fall One Shot Short in Doubleheader Split

The Pierre Governor basketball teams would split its doubleheader on Tuesday in Watertown as the girls would run away with a 57-33 win while the boys would fall 43-40.

In the girls game, Pierre led just 19-16 at the end of the first quarter but would dominate in the middle quarters outscoring the Arrows 36-8 to take a 55-24 lead through three quarters. The running clock would be used in the fourth and Pierre only had to score two points to secure a win over Watertown. The Arrows had 28 turnovers as they fall to 1-2. Pierre was led by Reese Terwilliger with 20 points while Lennix DuPris would add 13 in the win. Pierre is now on a four game winning streak.

In the boys game, Luke Olson would hit a buzzer beating three to end the first quarter to give Pierre a 14-13 lead. Pierre would lead 24-20 at the half and a three by Dawson Getz to begin the third quarter got Pierre up 27-20. However, an 8-0 run would be a difference in the game as the Arrows would take the lead and keep the game close the rest of the night. Pierre did lead 34-33 after three quarters, but could only hit two threes in the fourth being outscored 10-6 falling 43-40. With two seconds remaining, Cade Kaiser would inbound to Jett Zabel and feed Getz racing up the court to give the Govs the shot they wanted to tie the game up, but it wouldn’t go and the Govs fall to 3-2 on the season snapping a three game winning streak. Olson would finish with a game high 15 for the Govs while Zabel would add 10.

The Governors are off now until Saturday, December 30 when the boys will travel to Bismarck and the girls will host the Demons. The girls game can be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
