For the first time this season the Stanley County boys basketball team will hit the court as the girls will play its second game, both taking on Miller on the road in a doubleheader.
The Lady Buffaloes will face the Rustlers coming off its first game of the season a loss against the Chamberlain Cubs at home. Of the four teams playing tonight, the Lady Buffs are the only team who has played so far this season. Miller went 18-5 last season, but fell just short of the Class A state tournament with a 60-47 loss to Rapid City Christian in the SoDak 16. Miller would graduate five seniors from last year’s squad and this year become a very young team. Aleah Schlecter and Morgan Kolda are the lone juniors and without any seniors, are the oldest players on this year’s team. The Rustlers have seven sophomores listed on the varsity roster along with four freshmen. It will be an intriguing start to the season to see how the young kids do.
Joey Fischer will coach his first game for the Stanley County Buffaloes tonight as he takes the reigns from Max Foth, who stepped down after last year. Fischer was on the coaching staff last year which brings familiarity to the team to begin the season. Stanley County finished last season at 3-18 with a young squad and split its two games with the Rustlers, beating Miller to begin the season 59-56, but falling 64-52 in the 6A Region Tournament. Stanley County only graduated two seniors from last year’s team and return Broch Zeeb who was the only junior from last year to his senior year. Miller would go 13-10 last season falling to Dakota Valley in the SoDak 16 game and graduate five seniors from last year’s squad. Three Rustler seniors will lead the charge to begin the season.
