PIERRE. (KCCR) — A new scholarship is being offered up in the name of two legendary Pierre educators. The Jay and Bev Mickelson Scholarship was started by a group of former students including Kirk Albertson…

Dr. Murray Thompson says the group organizing the scholarship is well on it’s way to a lofty 250-thousand dollar goal….

Albertson says they are still working on criteria for the scholarships…

Bev Mickelson started teaching in Pierre in 1969 while Jay started as Bev’s student teacher in 1970. Jay Mickelson taught numerous topics over 49 years as an educator and the Mickelson’s have impacted some 6000 students over the years. The scholarship is being managed by the South Dakota Community Foundation based in Pierre. The first scholarships are expected to be awarded for the Class of 2025.
