The second member of the Pierre Governor baseball team has been named to the South Dakota High School baseball Hall of Fame as Peyton Zabel would be surprised by the Pierre coaching staff Sunday night.
Zabel is the oldest of three brothers who have been a part of the Pierre high school baseball program is currently at Texas State playing his final season with the Bobcats. All three brothers, Peyton, Grey and Jett have all won multiple championships across Pierre sports through their time in Pierre. Zabel was the quarterback in the first state championship in the streak of the now seven in a row for football and was also instrumental in the Post 8 state championship in 2017. During his time with the high school baseball team the Governors reached the state championship for the first time in 2018. In that 2018 spring, Zabel was a perfect 7-0 on the mound throwing 38 innings allowing just one total earned run on eight total hits. His ERA was a minuscule 0.184 and a WHIP of 0.684. Zabel recorded 79 strikeouts to just 18 walks. The batting average against was just .065 in that season. Zabel will join Landon Badger as the only other member of the Pierre Governors in the High School Baseball Hall of Fame. Badger was inducted in 2022.
