Governor Wrestling Begins as Boys Look to Defend Dual Crown with Emphasis on Individual

The Pierre Governor wrestling teams have begun its season with its first practice on Monday as several wrestlers go from football on Friday to wrestling on Monday. The Governor boys team would win its second dual state championship in three years since the return of the dual championships.

The Governors return plenty from last year’s squad, although lose a state champion in Deegan Houska. Chance Carda, Trey Lewis and Tristan Spencer all reached the state championship match and will be back for their senior years along with sophomore Alex Oedekoven as all four will be looking to avenge state championship losses to win the individual title. Shawn Lewis, the head coach of the Governors says the individual side of wrestling has already been talked about this week…

This is a big team with nearly 40 wrestlers out this year with over half being freshman and Lewis says the first couple of weeks are going to be a huge balancing act…

Lewis says he’s excited for the season and coaching guys who he’s been around a lot through the years…

The Governor wrestling teams open up the season on December 1 and 2 with its annual trip the Mandan Tournament in North Dakota.
