Fort Thompson Man Sentenced For Assaulting Federal Officer

PIERRE, (KCCR) — A Fort Thompson man has been sentenced in federal court for assaulting a federal law enforcement officer. U-S Attorney Alison Ramsdell says 43 year-old Derek Kennedy was sentenced to 45 days in federal custody with eight months of home arrest last week. Kennedy will also serve three years of supervised release after his prison term. Kennedy was indicted by a federal gran jury in January and pleaded guilty in August. Ramsdell says Kennedy was involved in an incident in Lower Brule in July of 2022 when Kennedy was being arrested for unrelated tribal offenses. As federal officers booked Kennedy into a jail in Lower Brule, he became combative with officers. He attempted to bite the arm of an officer and spit in the officer’s face. Kennedy was immediately placed in the custody of the U-S Marshal’s Service to begin serving his sentence.
