PIERRE. (KCCR) — The South Dakota Highway Patrol has released the names of two men involved in a fatal head-on crash in Hughes County on Friday. The Patrol says a Jeep and a 2023 Chevy 2500 truck collided Friday afternoon around 4:30 pm, 11 miles north of Pierre on South Dakota Highway 1804. The investigation has yet to determine the year and make of the Jeep in the crash. The driver of the Jeep, 19 year-old Hayden Schmautz of Fort Pierre was killed in the crash. The Chevy’s driver, 27 year-old Adan Ignacio Garcia of Raton, New Mexico suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries. Garcia was transported to Avera St. Mary’s hospital in Pierre. Garcia was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Seat belt use by Schmautz is under investigation. There were no passengers in either vehicle.
