Collection Of Missouri River Steamboat Photos Added To Digital State Archives

PIERRE. (KCCR) — More photos have been preserved forever in digital form by the South Dakota State Archives. The collection of photos and post cards document the use of steamboats on the Missouri River. The Henry J. King collection was donated to Brule County in 1961 by King’s family. King was a boatman on the Missouri River as Chamberlain was founded. The collection was in the Brule County Courthouse until their donation to the state archives in 2008. A donation by Chuck and Bonny Schroyer of Pierre has helped the State Archives create into a digital form some 138 photographs. Images in the collection include early Chamberlain, Missouri River scenes, the Corn Palace, Fort Hale and the Old Brule Agency. Most are images of steamboats and the freight industry along the river in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Steamboats included in the collection include the Ada Belle, the General Meade and the Red Cloud. To find the photos online, go to the South Dakota Digital Archives and search Henry King.C
