Governors Battle, Harrisburg Remains Unbeaten

The Pierre Governor volleyball team came back from its week break of games with renewed energy and took it to the Harrisburg Tigers, but ultimately fell short in a sweep by the Tigers on Tuesday in Pierre.

The Governors were dropped 28-26, 25-20 and 25-13 in the three set loss, but against the best team in the state, Pierre had the Tigers on the ropes in the first set. The Govs had a 13-6 lead over Harrisburg before the Tigers crawled back and took its first lead late in set one. Harrisburg was able to close it out and come from behind again in the second set after Pierre had 20-19 lead and score the final six points. Harrisburg then rolled in the third set to remain unbeaten and go to 17-0 on the season.

Gabi Zachariasen led the match with 14 kills while Kennedy Kokenge would tally eight as Harrisburg had 43 kills of the 78 points in total. Pierre would be led by Campbell Boddicker who finished with 11 kills on the night. Pierre would lose Lainey Reinke, the team’s libero to injury in warmups. The Govs put Grace Hanton in the libero spot and Jordan Mayer stepped up and both played exceptional in Reinke’s absence.

The Governors are now 8-6 on the season and will travel down to Yankton on Thursday for an ESD contest against the Gazelles. First serve will be at 7:00 on KCCR.
