Governor Girls Host Jefferson, Boys Travel to Lincoln for First Round of Playoffs

The 2023 Soccer playoffs are set to begin this afternoon as the Pierre Governor girls will be at home taking on Jefferson while the boys will travel to face Lincoln.

The Governor girls are in the 8-9 matchup with a rematch from just a week and a half ago as the Govs beat the Cavaliers 3-1 in a rainy, dreary Saturday. Pierre will be looking for a second straight time to advance to the quarterfinals. The Governors for the third straight year, start at home in the playoffs. Pierre beat Mitchell in the first round of the playoffs in overtime last year.

The Governor boys will be the 16 seed looking for a second straight historic upset, trying to knock off the top seed Lincoln Patriots. Last year the 16 seed Brandon Valley upset both Huron the top seed and Spearfish the eight seed to reach the semifinals. Pierre will be looking to follow in the footsteps of the Lynx trying to knock off the state runner up in Lincoln. The Patriots lost in the state championship to Rapid City Stevens.

The Governor girls will have kickoff at 5:00 at home. The boys contest was originally scheduled for 5:00 as well, but because of the chance of storms in the late evening the game has been moved up to a 3:30 start. The Girls game will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with coverage at 4:30 as Jon Winkler and Mendel Miller will have the call.
