Deadline Coming For Property Tax Moratorium For Work Done To Historic Buildings

PIERRE, (KCCR) — A deadline is approaching for state property tax moratorium on history properties. November 1st is the deadline to apply for the moratorium. State law has established an eight-year property tax moratorium for private property to encourage historic preservation. The moratorium applies for restoration and rehabilitation work done on historic sites during the last year. A new application is required for every year work is done on a property. The property tax moratorium is open to buildings listed on the National or State Register of Historic Places that are rehabilitated to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards of Rehabilitation. Qualifying work and structures can have their property tax assessments frozen for eight-years if approved for a moratorium. A total of 18 properties across South Dakota were approved for the moratorium by the State Historical Society Board of Trustees last year. More information on the program can be found by calling the State Historical Society at 605-773-6005.
