Defense Key in Governors Win over Bucks

The Pierre Governors went behind 7-0 after the first offensive drive of the game against the Yankton Bucks on Friday and the defense held strong to help Pierre to a 27-14 win on the road.

On a night when the defense had to be strong, the Governors were able to get the stops when they needed and hold Yankton to under 300 yards of total offense. Lucas Kampshoff went 17-43 through the air for 264 yards, but the rushing attack had just 26 yards all night, three in the second half. Pierre was down 7-0 at halftime, but it was Trey Lewis who started the second half with a big 33 yard run to help Pierre score to tie the game in its first offensive drive of the half. Cade Kaiser would scramble on 4th and 16 and score from 18 yards out. Pierre then would drive the field again with Jett Zabel scoring from a yard out in the wildcat. Lewis, who finished with 168 yards on the ground, capped his night off with the go-ahead and eventual game winning touchdown on an 18 yard run to give Pierre a 20-14 lead. George Stalley would have a 66 yard touchdown reception for the dagger and the Governors would improve to 4-0 on the season while Yankton falls to 3-1.

Pierre will host Watertown on Homecoming night on Friday. Coverage of the game will begin at 6:30 with kickoff at 7:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
