Rounds Honors Second Area Resident With Atomic Veteran Commemorative Medal

PIERRE, (KCCR) — A second Pierre/Fort Pierre area veteran has been recognized for their service to the nuclear weapons capability of the United State. The office of South Dakota Senator Mike Rounds post humorously presented 93 year-old Sherman Monroe of Fort Pierre the Atomic Veteran Commemorative Service metal…

Monroe served in Lima Company, 2nd Battalion, 2053rd Army Service Unit at Fort Meade, Maryland. He experienced the seventh of 11 detonations of an atomic device on April 25, 1953. Rounds thanked Monroe’s family for “Sherm’s” service…

Sherman’s wife Vivian says Sherman would have been proud of the honor…

Monroe joins Gerald Johnson as the first two Atomic Veteran’s in South Dakota. Johnson received his recognition in late August. Both men took part in Operation Upshot-Knothole at Camp Desert Rock at the Nevada Proving Grounds. Johnson was among the 50 or so in attendance for the ceremony Friday at the Holiday Inn in Fort Pierre. Monroe was laid to rest Friday at the Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis.
