After two wins on Friday, the Pierre Governor soccer teams are back on the field today, this time at home to face the Roosevelt Roughriders in its home opener.
The Governor girls will face the Roosevelt team who tied the Jefferson Cavaliers on Friday at 0-0. Roosevelt is coming off a championship in 2021 and then making the state semifinals in 2022, the Roughriders picked up a 2-0 win over the Governors last season. The Roughrider defense is picking up right where it left off after it gave up two or more goals just three times all season and had eight shutouts in 2022. With 11 goals scores on Friday for Pierre, the offense will see its first true test to score against the stingy Roughriders.
The Governor boys will look for a second straight win hosting the Roughriders. Pierre beat Douglas 3-0 on Friday and will face the 0-1 Roosevelt team after they fell 3-1 to Jefferson. Roosevelt went winless in 2022 which included a 4-0 shutout for the Governors at Howard Wood Field. Roosevelt just scored seven goals all season and the Governors want to keep this year’s team down to begin the season as well. Haley Fabel would be looking for his second consecutive shutout in net.
Coverage will start at 3:45 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with the girls game to start at 4:00 and the boys game to follow around 6:00. Jon Winkler and Mendel Miller will have the call.
