Tonight begins the 2023 soccer season thrusting fall sports into action as the Pierre Governors will travel to Box Elder to face the Douglas Patriots in a boys and girls doubleheader.
The Governor girls are coming off a quarterfinal appearance last season, but will have just two seniors on this year’s team. Ryann Barry and Brianna Sargent will be the leaders of this team and with last year’s success, their stats speak to the leadership they have. Barry led the team in goals and points while Sargent was also in the top in points for the Govs. Pierre would beat Douglas last season 10-0, having no problems to pick up an opening season win.
The Governor boys also would shutout the Patriots in the opener last year with a 7-0 win. While the result could still be the same, it will be a different team to get the job done. Pierre graduated 14 seasons last season and now a new group with less varsity experience will take over. Even though the group lacks experience at the varsity level, the crew has been playing together for multiple years across several teams leading up to high school. This new crew can be a lot of fun to watch this season.
The doubleheader is set to begin at 5:00 Central time with the girls playing first and the boys to follow. KCCR will have coverage of the home opener next Tuesday when the Govs host the Roosevelt Roughriders.
