In What Could be a Historic Year, Governors Begin Practice not Concerned about Record

The Pierre Governors christened its new season just like it always does, at Oahe downstream. However, this year could be different as the Governors look for a state record seventh consecutive title, but it’s not something on the forefront of the coaches minds…

Steve Steele, the head coach of the Governors heads into his eighth season as the Govs head man. In the previous seven seasons, the Govs have just one playoff loss which was Steele’s first year and have won 18 straight playoff games. This year is the year where Pierre can stand alone, beating out West Central’s run of six straight state titles from 2000-2005.

One of the biggest challenges will be who will take over the reigns at quarterback for departed Lincoln Kienholz, who is now at Ohio State. Steele says the fun of high school football is every year the team looks different…

Steele says Cade Kaiser will take over the quarterback duties. Kaiser was a big threat offensively for the Govs in 2022 as a wide receiver. Kaiser says it will be fun challenge going back to his roots…

This run started with a Zabel at quarterback, at lineman who would play at North Dakota state and now a tight end who will also play at North Dakota State. Peyton quarterbacked the first state title, Grey was a lineman for three titles and now Jett looks to leave high school as the fourth consecutive class with state titles every year in high school. Zabel says the team isn’t focused on a state title coming into the start of practice…
