After dropping two games on Friday, both by eight runs, Pierre Post 8 came back for a 10-5 win in game one on Saturday, and then would score 10 runs in the seventh inning to win the second game 16-8.
In game one, Pierre would face Washburn out of Minneapolis and would pick up a 10-5 victory. Pierre would strike first going up 3-0 after two innings. Matt Hanson would score on a wild pitch and Carter Sanderson would drive in a run on an RBI ground out in the top of the first and then a two out single by Jett Zabel in the second gave the Eights the 3-0 lead. Hanson would double home a run in the top of the fourth to extend the lead back to three 4-1 before Pierre would hang a six spot in the top of the sixth. Pierre would have RBI hits in five straight at bats as Ridge Leimbach would single, Sanderson a double, Matthew Coverdale a single, Miles Doyle a single and Connor Bruce a two RBI single to drive in the six runs. Jonny Lyons would go six and a third innings on the mound for the win allowing 10 hits, four runs with four walks and two strikeouts.
In game two, Pierre again would open up the scoring with a Coverdale RBI single to lead 1-0. However, Lakeville North, the host team of the pool would score seven runs in the bottom of the first to take a 7-1 lead. The Eights would get two runs back in the second with RBI singles by Hanson and Leimbach and then another two runs in the fourth with an RBI double by Hanson and another RBI single by Leimbach. Pierre would pull within 7-5 and then 8-6 heading into the seventh. The Eights would have 15 guys come to the plate and 10 runs would score as Bruce had an RBI single, Hanson a two RBI single to give the Eights the lead 9-8, Sanderson a bases loaded walk, Coverdale reaching on an error, Spencer Easland with an RBI single, Zabel a two RBI single and a Nolan Peterson two RBI single. In total, Hanson had five RBIs while Leimbach, Coverdale, Zabel, and Peterson each would drive in two runs. Zabel would finish off the final three and two thirds innings to get the win allowing just two hits, a walk with three strikeouts.
Pierre is now 8-22 on the season and 2-2 at the Gopher Classic. While winning the pool is unlikely even after its two wins on Saturday, Pierre will look to finish the weekend at 3-2 facing Middleton, Wisconsin on Sunday. First pitch is at 9:00 AM.
