State Transportation Commission Approves Dedicating Part Of US Highway 18 For Sicangu Lakota Code Talkers

PIERRE — A section of a U-S Highway in south central South Dakota will be dedicated to the efforts of the Sicangu Lakota Code Talkers. The South Dakota Transportation Commission approved designating a 153-mile stretch of Highway 18 for tribal code-talkers who used the Lakota language to send communications to Allied and American forces during conflicts like World War II. Department of Transportation Director of Operations Craig Smith says District 26 Senator Shawn Bordeaux of Mission asked that another highway be designated for the Code Talkers back in April…

That designation extends beyond South Dakota…

Christina Bennett, Construction and Maintenance Engineer for the D-O-T says a memorial highway is separate from any memorial bridges that may be on that section of highway…

The Sicangu Lakota Code Talker Highway will pass through Gregory, Tripp and Todd Counties and pass through cities including Burke, Gregory, Winner, Mission and the Rosebud Indian Reservation.
