Post 8 Fall in Comeback Bid, Can’t Hold Lead in Doubleheader Sweep by Watertown

Pierre Post 8 would be unable to finish off a comeback in game one and then surrendered two different four run leads as Watertown Post 17 would sweep the Eights 7-6 and 10-8 on Tuesday at home.

Cooper Terwilliger would get his first start at the senior legion level and pick up a 1-2-3 first inning. However, he would run into trouble in the second as five runs would score and Watertown would take a 5-0 lead as an unearned run would score in the inning. Another two runs would score in the fifth giving Watertown a 7-0 lead but the rising freshman was solid in his first outing on the mound going six innings, allowing eight hits, five earned runs with three walks and a strikeout. Pierre would start to mount their comeback in the fifth inning scoring five times Jett Zabel had an RBI fielder’s choice and with two outs in the inning, Matt Hanson delivered a two run single, followed by an RBI double from Sanderson and an RBI single from Ridge Leimbach. Nolan Peterson would have an RBI single in the sixth as Post 8 pulled within one, but it was Jack Heesch ending the game retiring the side in order in the bottom of the seventh.

Post 8 would jump out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Jonny Lyons would hit a three run shot, his second homer of the season and Spencer Easland would throw four straight scoreless innings. Leimbach would have an RBI fielder’s choice in the third to give Pierre a 4-0 lead. However, Watertown stormed back to tie the game in the top of the fifth at 4-4. Pierre swung the momentum back in its favor as Carter Sanderson drove in two runs with single, Matthew Coverdale had an RBI ground out and Miles Doyle reached on a two out error to give Pierre the four run lead back at 8-4. But in the sixth, Watertown scored six runs, three unearned to claim its first lead which was ended by a Drew Denzer three RBI double to give Post 17 the lead for good 10-8. Heesch would close the game in the final two innings and keep the Eights from its first win of the season, dropping them to 0-12. Watertown gets back over .500 at now 17-16.
