Pierre Man Facing Charges After Striking Parked Car

PIERRE — A Pierre man is facing multiple charges for driving drunk and distracted and striking a parked car. Pierre Police Captain Bryan Walz says officers were called shortly after midnight on Wednesday morning to the area of Dakota and Washington Avenues where a vehicle had struck a parked car. Officers made contract with the driver of the vehicle, 20 year-old Justyce Murphy. Murphy told police he was driving between 30 and 35 miles an hour while looking at his phone when he struck the parked car. The crash moved the parked vehicle some 30 to 40 feet from its original location. As officers spoke to Murphy signs of possible impairment were observed. Murphy admitted to drinking alcohol prior to the crash and was administered a field sobriety test. Murphy was transported to the Hughes County Jail on charges of First Offense D-U-I, Reckless Driving, Using a Mobile Electric Device while Driving, Underage Consumption, No Insurance and Failure to Wear a Seat Belt.
