The Pierre Governor tennis team is in Sioux Falls for the second day of the Class A state tournament with a couple of strong performances.
In the singles side, both Devin Dodson in Flight 1 and Carter Gordon in Flight 5 will be playing for the consolation championship while Weston Northrup in Flight 6 has advanced to the state semifinals. Northrup, the four seed in the flight, won both sets 6-4 and 7-6 to advance to the semifinals after having a bye in the first round. Both Dodson and Gordon would fall in their first match but would come back and win in the consolation semifinals to reach the consolation championship as Dodson would win 10-2 and Gordon 10-7. Lucas Hight in Flight 2 would go 0-2 while Jacob Leiferman in Flight 3 and Keller Herman in Flight Four would win their first round matches, but then would be eliminated dropping their next two matches.
On the doubles side in Flight 1 the team of Dodson and Lucas Hight will be playing in the fifth place semifinals to start the afternoon. Pierre won 6-4, 6-4 over St. Thomas More in the first match before dropping to the top seed Rapid City Christian in the quarterfinals. For doubles Flight 2 and 3, Gordon and Leiferman dropped its initial match 6-1, 6-3 and are into the consolation semifinals as is Herman and Northrup with a loss at 6-2, 6-3. Both flights will play in the consolation semifinals and have to win to play one more match, in the consolation championship.
Pierre is in ninth place after day one with 92 points. Rapid City Christian leads the way with a total of 360 points through the first day.
