Grouse Survey Of Fort Pierre National Grasslands Completed

FORT PIERRE — The population of prairie grouse across the Fort Pierre National Grasslands is up from last year. U-S-D-A Forest Service staff have completed annual surveys of the birds. The survey found 678 displaying males in the spring 2023 reporting which is a five-percent increase over last spring. The results indicate a reversal of the pattern seen last year. Gains in 2023 were due solely from greater prairie chickens. The number of males increased by 71 from 504 to 575. Male sharp-tailed grouse declined from 140 to 103. Officials say a good 2022 reproduction success has allowed the overall population of prairie grouse to rebound to levels not seen since 2021. Hens have had abundant nesting cover to choose from, but weather patterns through the spring in May and June could have a big impact on chick production and survival.
