Governors Sweep Patriots with Simpson’s Sacrifice Fly

The Pierre Governors would come back twice in its doubleheader against the Lincoln Patriots picking up an 8-5 win in the first game and a 4-3 win in the second game.

In game one, Jett Zabel had a slow start on the mound as four runs would score in the first inning, but then would settle in going four straight scoreless innings allowing the Governors to make a comeback. Deegan Houska would single home the first run of the game in the bottom of the third and then Lincoln Kienholz would hit a two run homer to pull the Govs within one 4-3. In the bottom of the fifth Jonny Lyons would tie the game with an RBI single before Matthew Brewer drove in the go-ahead run. Lincoln would tie the game in the top of the sixth, but it was Brecken Krueger driving in what would be the winning run on an RBI triple before Houska added the insurance with a two-run single. Jack Merkwan would close the door to pick up the save in the seventh inning.

In the second game, Ridge Leimbach would grind through two tough innings allowing just three runs working around two errors in the first inning. Merkwan would drive in the first run of the game with an RBI fielder’s choice before Houska would drive in his fourth run of the day and pull Pierre within 3-2. JJ Bucholz would toss five scoreless innings in relief for the Governors keeping the deficit at one allowing just two hits on three walks and two strikeouts. In the bottom of the seventh, Houska would tie the game at 3-3 on a base hit up the middle and then with the bases loaded and one out, Charlie Simpson would hit a ball to right field deep enough for Houska to tag up and score the winning run to walk off the doubleheader sweep of the Lincoln Patriots.

The Governors improve to 3-5 on the season with the two wins and have won three in a row. Pierre will host Washington on Friday and Brandon Valley on Saturday next weekend. All four games will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler and Blake Dean on the call.
