It was a cold night, but the Pierre Governors warmed to the task in the second game as Pierre earned a split in Brookings on Tuesday falling in the first game 5-1 and winning the second game 4-2.
In game one the Governors would get a solid performance from Jackson Edman in his third start in as many doubleheaders as he would go five and a third inning allowing just four runs, three earned, on five hits, three walks and striking out five. However, the Govs could only muster five hits in total against Nathan Lease who had to just throw 81 pitches in a complete game. Cade Kaiser came off the bench and delivered an RBI double in the top of the seventh to nix the shutout.
In game two, Lincoln Kienholz went toe-to-toe in a pitchers dual with Breck Hirrschoff as Deegan Houska drove in the games first run in the top of the second on an RBI single through the right side. A walk to Zach Struck and then two steals, along with a throwing error to third tied the game at 1-1 at the end of four innings. Then another unearned run would score on an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth gave Brookings a 2-1 lead heading into the final frame. With two walks in the inning and two outs, Kaiser delivered his second RBI hit in the seventh inning as he doubled down the left field line to tie the game at 2-2. Jett Zabel would give the Govs the lead on two RBI single to left in the very next at bat and then would seal the win picking up the save in the bottom of the seventh for the Govs first win of the season. Kienholz would go six full innings allowing just four hits, no earned runs with two walks and had 14 strikeouts in the ballgame.
The Governors are now 1-5 on the season and will be at home for the first time this season against Lincoln. Coverage of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4:45 with first pitch at 5:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
