Three Governor Coaches Named to Region Coach of the Year

In Region 3, three of the four spots for Region Coach of the Year are claimed by Pierre Governor coaches. Brianna Kusler is the boys region coach of the year while Brevin Kaiser and Terry Becker are the two assistant coaches of the year.

Both the girls and boys teams ended droughts to reach the state tournament in 2023 as the Governor girls made the championship game while the boys would win the consolation championship after a double overtime thriller. The Governors swept the boys head coach and assistant coach as Kusler wins the honor and Kaiser, one of her assistant coaches takes home the honor. The Govs went 16-8 and qualified for the state tournament after winning its SoDak 16 game at home in a fantastic run to close out the season.

Becker had his first season as the assistant coach for the girls team. His defensive philosophy was a huge addition to the team this year and part of the reason why Pierre had lost just three games all the way up to the state championship game. The Governors had a solid offense, but had one of, if not the best defense in AA all year.

Wolsey-Wessington’s Josh McGilvery was the girls head coach winner of Region 3. Trent Olson of Winner, was selected for the assistant boys coach of the year in Region 8.
