This Weekend Marks Final Weekend Before Cultural Heritage Center Closes For Renovation

PIERRE — This upcoming weekend is a big, transitional weekend for the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre and the South Dakota Historical Society. Dr. David Grabitske with the Center says it is closing to the public to prepare for massive renovation work…

The facility could be closed up to 18 months for the renovation and improvement work. The goal is to have the work completed in time for the 250th birthday of America in 2026. Grabitske says much of the exhibits have been shared with other museums for temporary storage space…

While the store at the museum will be closed, the Heritage store on the first floor of the State Capitol will remain open and in operation. Starting Monday, artifacts will begin their move to a secure location for storage during the renovation. Workers have been relocated to the Becker-Hanson building in Pierre and Northridge Plaza. The 2022 South Dakota Legislature passed a bill to use eight-point-eight million dollars in general fund dollars and three-point-three million in other fund authority to renovate and modernize the Cultural Heritage Center.
