FORT PIERRE — The City of Fort Pierre is looking to join it’s neighbors to the east as a Tree City U-S-A community. Mayor Gloria Hanson says the city is seeking membership in Tree City U-S-A…
The City of Pierre has been named a Tree City U-S-A for 38 straight years. To be recognized as a Tree City U-S-A community, that community must demonstrate sound practices relating to forestry, have an Arbor Board and tree maintenance plans and ordinances. Fort Pierre created it’s own Arbor Board, breaking off from the Pierre/Fort Pierre Arbor Board in 2021. Fort Pierre has also gone through extensive investigation of how to address the eventual appearance of the Emerald Ash Borer from southeast South Dakota. That includes the inventorying of over 200 ash trees on public property.
