Pierre Wins State Duals Defeating Undefeated Brandon Valley in Championship

The Pierre Governor team, after placing third in the team score on Friday behind Watertown in second and Brandon Valley in first, would come into Saturday for the team dual tournament and would beat the Lynx in the championship match to win its second dual title in three years.

The Governors ran past the Rapid City Stevens Raiders in the first round with a 46-20 win. Then in the semifinals, Pierre also had no problems with the Sturgis Scoopers winning 54-18. That led to the championship match with the Lynx, the only team to beat the Governors all season. Pierre started down 13-0 after three matches, then rattled off six straight wins including four pins as Trey Lewis, Chance Carda, Gavin Stotts and Elijah Boutchee all recorded pins to give Pierre a 30-13 lead. Alex Oedekoven would win the second to final dual to give Pierre a 33-30 lead and with a 4-3 lead in pins, Lincoln Shoenhard lost 3-1 which helped the Governors win. With the score tied 33-33, the Governors had more pins to win the title.

It’s the second title in three years for Pierre. There will be a welcome home on Tuesday at 6:00 at Riggs High School as the Govs will recognize both the girls and boys teams.
